Choosing a massage oil
I am choosy about the products I use on my own skin and what I use on client’s skin. I believe that a massage treatment should benefit the skin as well as the muscles, soft tissue and nervous system. I have tried many different types of oils and oil blends for use on clients during massage. I wanted to avoid a heavy oil that would sit on top of the skin leaving the client feeling greasy. Also important to me that my choice of oil be a nut free product that has only one ingredient, requires no preservative and it is unscented. I have chosen Jojoba oil.
Jojoba Oil in Massage
Jojoba oil is easily but not too quickly absorbed, by the skin. This absorption rate prevents the need for continuous application of the oil during massage. From my point of view as a massage therapist this means the oil will stay on top of she skin long enough for me to complete the massage without having to reapply. So a little goes a long way. Clients benefit because they won’t feel greasy after their massage due to the jojoba being absorbed by the skin and their skin will benefit without irritation from the application. I love everything about jojoba oil, it is a beautiful golden color and has no scent. I have personally used it for years. I use it on my skin, scalp and hair. It is great to use before and after shaving and mild enough to use on babies sensitive skin. It is a higher priced oil than some other types but it the benefits outweigh the cost difference.
What is Jojoba?
Jojoba is a mixture of long chain monounsaturated liquid wax esters. They are structurally different from triglycerides, which are what most of the other seed oils are made of. Technically speaking, Jojoba isn’t really an oil it is a liquid wax.
Safe to use
Jojoba oil is non-toxic, non-comedogenic and non-allergenic. This means that it will not clog pores and will not cause any allergic reactions. It is also not an irritant, so it can safely be used around the eyes, on the skin and hair. Jojoba is one of the most stable oil because it rarely oxidizes. It has a very high Vitamin E content compared to other typical oils and is antioxidant in nature. This vitamin and other minerals found in the oil keep the skin healthy and helps it resist infections better and more effectively. Jojoba oil contains oleic acid, which is one of the essential building blocks for a healthy skin.
